HSAM was founded in early 1996. It is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization. HSAM works closely with the Hawaii Medical Association (HMA). HSAM has been involved in numerous CME efforts directed toward recognizing and treating patients with addictions in our community.
HSAM is affiliated with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
Membership applications are welcome from all interested physicians in the state of Hawaii. Contact Liza Lee or Dr. George Carlson through HMA or this website.
HSAM presents an annual award: Advocate for Recovery. This is presented to a person in Hawaii who has made a significant contribution to promoting the public awareness of addiction as a preventable and treatable disease, and who has successfully advocated for increased availability and access to treatment.
Last year’s recipient was Harry Kim, mayor of the Island of Hawaii.
